WARM COMMUNITY
Moonlight is family. With only 67 homes spread out over over our beautiful campus, every face is familiar and friendly. The community gathers together for a communal kiddush and socializing each Shabbat after shul. Pickup team sports, hiking trips, mountain biking, needlepointing, tehillim groups, shiurim, bake sales, dance classes, yoga and exercising are just some of the fun activities our members enjoy doing together (some even throughout the year). We hope you'll consider spending the summer with us!
Our History
Moonlight Cottages was started in the mid 1950’s by Jeno and Fanny Berger. Located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, right outside of the town of Monticello, Moonlight Cottages provided a welcome retreat to Modern Orthodox Jewish families seeking to escape the city heat for the summer. The Bergers rented bungalows to various families, many who still continue to come to Moonlight today. In 1981, the Bergers came up with a revolutionary idea. They brought in mobile homes on the property and sold them to seven pioneering families. These families entered into a 99 year lease with the Bergers. In 1983, the Bergers sold out their interests in Moonlight. The property was developed as a cooperative colony and beautiful newly developed housing units were brought in, with all of the units (now 67) owning the land in common.
